Regardless of sport there are always a group of basic safety guidelines that can be used across the board. These should be considered the mandatory precautions for all coaches.
• Require players to have a preseason physical exam before allowing them to participate in any practice. Also, make sure their parents or guardians have signed a consent form confirming the examination has cleared the student-athlete to play.
• Always check the condition of the equipment and training aids. Make sure the first-aid kit is stocked with the necessities – cold packs, elastic bandages, bandage scissors, oral thermometer, safety pins, Ziploc-type bags to hold ice packs, medical release forms with emergency phone numbers, gauze pads, adhesive tape, liquid antibacterial soap, sterile gloves, etc.
