Finding new coaches for high school athletic programs comes down to a lot more than selecting someone who knows a particular sport.
Athletic directors told FUEL Magazine that new coaches entering a high school’s athletic program may not be the best coach in the market, but they should be the right one.
Jay Godwin, in his seventh year as athletic director at Buchholz High School in Gainesville, Fla., said the first thing he looks for in a new coaching prospect is someone “who’s good with kids.”
Often, that leads to teachers, be it internally or in the local area.
“I want someone who respects the integrity of interscholastic sports,” Godwin said.
