An AD’s Work Is Never Done

Wayne Welton was the athletic director at Chelsea (Mich.) High School for three decades and received every honor there was for someone holding that important position during his career. Welton said he was never the type to look at his watch with regards to when he was “supposed” to be going home.

“If there was work to do, we were going to find a way to get it done,” Welton said. “Time is valuable and you either spend your time or invest your time. We invested our time in people.”

With added responsibilities and more sports being added to the schedule, how can an athletic director better manage his or her schedule? Here are a few suggestions how athletic directors can use their limited time more effectively and appear to be here, there and everywhere – at the same time.

Forget the To-Do Lists: Making to-do lists means you know everything that you need to do that day. Athletic directors know that many of the things they do during the day weren’t on the to-do list in the morning. Things happen and it’s best to just take care of them when they do – that way you don’t need to put them on a to-do list because they’re done.
